In-Person & Virtual Courses & Workshops

Creative Writing Canterbury offers locally based in-person courses and workshops as well as virtual ones, the latter means I can be more inclusive as well as reach further afield. This also enables an attending writer travelling for work or leisure to still be part of the class, if they wish to. The in-person provision is usually a suitable and comfortable venue in Canterbury city centre.

Many of my core, popular courses run for short terms over nine sessions. This arrangement helps optimise writer progression as tasks are set each week and you get to work through them outside of class and then share the results with the group.

I have found it increasingly beneficial to design these longer courses thematically and this strategy yields impressive results and feedback. It also enables me to meet demand from many attendees who so enjoyed working with me that they wish to return; no two sets of material and tasks are the same. I’ve created over seventy different creative writing courses.

Autumn 2025 Courses

These all have nine sessions of two and half hours and begin the w/c Monday 22 September and finish the last week of November, with a week’s break for the October half-term. Each course equates to 22.5 hours of contact time. My course fees are excellent value for money - email me for more information.

What to Expect

Most of my classes start with a limbering up writing task. This helps everyone to get into a creative frame of mind and if you are comfortable with doing so, you can share what you have written with the whole group thereafter. There is never any pressure, just encouragement.

For the one-off workshops there will be various writing opportunities, but any session will include tips on techniques and strategies alongside the sharing of ideas, related discussions, and helpful suggestions to improve. We also fit in lots of supportive guidance so that each writer can identify, develop, pursue and perfect their work (and ultimately move towards completing) whatever they want to focus on.

Teaching methodology

A range of methods enable writers to explore and progress. These will include opportunities to work individually, in pairs or small groups and as a whole class.

Class sizes and formats

We cap most groups at 10 or 11 so everyone has the opportunity to share writing in each class, though group numbers can be bigger or smaller for short courses and one-off workshops. Many classes last for two and half hours (with a short break), but other meets can be less contact time or significantly longer, depending on the theme, topic and aim of any given session. The scheduling and duration of each workshop or course will be detailed in the corresponding write-up.

Pricing and Booking Information

My prices are competitive and excellent value. Should you wish to find out more about a particular class, course or service then please email me.

Other related services

I can offer substantive editing, thus I not only proofread but also check for anything to do with language, structure, context, form, and, if a more fictional or creative text, I can consider aspects like character and plot, including continuity and authenticity.

Private mentoring (in person in the local area or through virtual meetings) is possible, for all sorts of writing needs and projects.

In addition, I am happy to provide fun workshops for businesses as part of your team-building, CPD or wellbeing initiatives.
