CREATIVE WRITING
CANTERBURY

An Emporium of Ideas

Welcome

Do you have a desire to pursue creative writing? Perhaps there’s a story stuck in your head or a character you often think of? Maybe there’s the hope to capture experiences connected to loved ones, your heritage, travel, or a mixture of life’s trials and triumphs?

You might find yourself at a stage where you have more time to pursue your interests, or perhaps need some help with written skills to enhance confidence as well as optimise educational pursuits or opportunities in the workplace. Some enrol to meet fellow writers, create a fictional realm, evoke the power of the pen, or simply record memories and musings gathered along the way.

Many choose to pursue a worthwhile hobby, sign up out of curiosity or to provide a bit of me-time as an escape from a busy working or family life. There are those immersed in the learning sphere (as either student or mentor) who want to refresh or jazz up their written skills, whereas others seek a new challenge or hope to benefit from the rewards and wellbeing that writing for pleasure can offer. Your wish could even be to complete a piece as a special gift.

People I work with include those who enjoyed a related subject in their earlier days but commitments got in the way, while some didn’t like the connected schooling or thrive in that environment, but have an appreciation of storytelling, poetry, Fantasy, or the theatre. I can help spark or reawaken a love and respect of the written word and related craft.

Let your voice and stories come to the fore, enhance your skill set and command of language, lose yourself in new worlds – whatever your motivation for considering this pathway, Creative Writing Canterbury can help.

Who I am

About KIMBERLEY

I believe that the learning environment should be enjoyable and supportive as well as structured and suitably challenging. The aim is that every single attendee leaves any of my workshops more knowledgeable, confident, and skilled. I take pride in the fact that we achieve this but also have fun along the way.

Part of being an effective tutor is to create a safe and open environment where people can explore through language, experimenting with their creative ideas and written offerings. I give instant feedback after every piece is shared, then gently encourage relevant peer involvement in the critique and advice. Enhancing knowledge and writing should be pleasurable undertakings, and establishing the right atmosphere is key, including where different perspectives, styles and topics are welcome.

I am a perceptive educator who also knows that having an admirable command of language and set of communication skills can make for a most rewarding, interesting life. My wealth of expertise combines with a genuine passion for words and stories, both fictional and real. I have an appreciation for the written form and helping others to express themselves artfully; furthermore, my career experience confirms that creative writing can be beneficial for wellbeing, and I’m privileged to see this firsthand.

“The important thing is not what we write but how we write.”

James Joyce

TESTIMONIALS

Sue

With a perfect balance of guidance and support, Kimberley creates an atmosphere where writers feel safe to take risks and experiment. My confidence, creativity and output has grown since I’ve started Kimberley’s classes. She recognises and nurtures the writer in us all.

Tom

Kimberley has an unfaltering record of enabling potential creative writers to unlock their abilities, become wordsmiths and gain a fluency that surprises them. Over several years I have observed that she is a most successful, patient and tolerant tutor, as well as appropriately vulnerable with us. Her skills are broad enough to help a diverse spectrum of students.

Shane

Before working with Kimberley, I had never written a poem. With her help, encouragement and guidance, I now compose and perform my poetry at open mic events.

Valerie

I have attended many creative writing classes in my time and can say that Kimberley’s are the most rewarding that I have experienced. As a student, I am always impressed at how brilliantly Kimberley devises fresh topics to spark our creativity; and her response to students’ writing is unfailingly constructive and supportive.
